Complete Contrast Allergy Premedication Kit
There are an estimated 80 Million CT scans performed in the United States every year with approximately half of those using intravenous (IV) contrast. For those that receive IV contrast, there is a 1-3% chance of an allergic type reaction. Of the 30 Million MRIs performed every year in the US a smaller percentage are performed with contrast and the rate of allergic type reactions is less than 1%.  The majority of contrast reactions will be mild including temporary rash or hives, but severe or life threatening reactions do occur. The American College of Radiology (ACR) recommends that patients who are at higher risk for an acute allergic reaction receive a premedication of steroids and an antihistamine prior to receiving IV contrast to reduce the frequency and/or severity of reactions. (see ACR Contrast Manual) The most common premedication regimen includes: Prednisone 50 mg by mouth at 13 hours, 7 hours and 1 hour before injection and Diphenhydramine (Benadryl®) 50 mg by mouth 1 hour before injection     Many patients are frustrated with the complex medication schedule and confusing instructions. When given an exam time of 9 AM, for example, many patients struggle with the instructions to start taking prednisone 13 hours before 9AM in this example.  In addition, pharmacies frequently do not carry 50 mg prednisone tablets, and as a result, patients may have to take a large number of pills, up to a total of thirty 5 mg tablets.  Pharmacies also do not dispense diphenhydramine (Benadryl®), but have patients buy over the counter (OTC) medication. The instructions specific to the diphenhydramine (Benadryl®) often do not get conveyed.  All of these issues can result in medications not being taken at the correct time or not at all with serious patient safety implications. The Contrast Allergy PreMed Pack was developed to solve the above issues by prepackaging the complete premedication regimen with an adjustable timing mechanism. (NDC 16129-101-01)  The patient selects their Exam Time and the prescribed times to take the premedication are displayed.  With the Contrast Allergy PreMed Pack we aim to improve patient compliance, patient safety and patient satisfaction.
